The thesis aims at how to interpret English prepositions more effectively by means of the contemporary theory of metaphor. Metaphor plays an important role in language learning. After studying the theory

we find that conceptual metaphor provides a reasonable interpretation of the uses of some English prepositions which are regarded as a big problem for English learners. We exemplify two English interpretations “up” and “in” to prove our point.
