Abstract

This study investigated the lexical bundles used in English writing textbook titled

A Handbook of Writing

. A corpus was constructed by selecting 124 texts from this book. Word combinations

appearing at least 3 times and being distributed in more than 3 different texts

were identified as lexical bundles. The results showed that: 1) overall

a total of 199 word combinations were found in this corpus. Out of these

39 lexical bundles were identified

the highest frequency being 10 times

the lowest frequency being 3 times. 2) In terms of structure

the noun and prepositional phrase lexical bundles were dominate. The verb phrase lexical bundles and dependent clause fragments lexical bundles were relatively rare in the textbook. 3) In terms of function

80% of the lexical bundles were research-oriented and participant-oriented

while few bundles were text-oriented

accounting for 20% of the total.
