Abstract

This study explores how contemporary Chinese youth redefine success and life aspirations in a materialistic society

using the case of Xiaopeng. Over a decade

Xiaopeng evolved from a backpacker to a bestselling author and social media influencer with over 10 million followers. The study examines his growth trajectory and educational impact on Chinese youth. Data were collected through in-depth online interviews with Xiaopeng and his followers. The study reveals that travel offers compelling educational elements for youth

who are significantly influenced by social media and idol effects. Chinese youth seek alternative paths to relieve stress and gain recognition

diverging from traditional success narratives. Influencers play multifaceted roles in guiding social learning and inspiring meaningful futures. This is the first academic study to understand how Chinese youth develop identity and careers through backpacking. It provides insights into how leaders educate and influence followers via online platforms and travel experiences.
