Alice Munro’s “Carried Away”

as the first story in collection Open Secrets

is a vivid demonstration of Munro’s skilled and nuanced narrative techniques in space. The interrelated spaces

Commercial Hotel

Doud’s factory and Carstairs Library

reveal the impact of commodification on people’s perception and people’s implicit desire to resist the mechanization and post-industrialism. By means of juxtaposition of events and shift of focalizations

Munro builds the multiple spaces to progress the story and to represent the theme. The psychological spaces of Jack and Louisa

their respective self-construction of images and at last their tragedy

specifically reflect how these social changes impact their perception of selfimages and their identities

and how impotent they are to change the status quo.
