With the increase of China’s global influence in economy
technology
and culture
etc.
more foreigners prefer to come to China for a visit. They will first go through China tourism websites to make their tour schedule. In order to make China tourism websites more attractive to foreign visitors
this paper compared the characteristics of China and Britain tourism websites based on the interactional metadiscourse theory. Two websites (Beijing and London) of travel agencies were chosen
covering 10 top attractions respectively. Metadiscoursive analyses showed that despite some minor similarities
the two sub-corpus displayed sharp contrast in terms of the way interactional metadiscourse was deployed. These observed differences were attributable to culture
tradition and thinking modes characteristic of the two cultural communities. Therefore
it is suggested that China tourism websites improve the linguistic characteristics
using more interactional metadiscourse especially more engagement markers to adapt to the target customers.
