摘要

Abstract

This research contributes to the literature through a case study that examines common trends and stereotypes that authors use to create and design Chinese characters' roles in modern realistic Japanese comic works since the 1970s. The study considers the usual depiction of Chinese comic characters

the changes in these typical images at selected periods over the past four decades

and the reasons and causes for these phenomena. The research reviews studies on Imagology and Japanese comics and analyses data on several indexes relevant to the study objects. We conclude that these Japanese authors created stories of individual characters and portrayed the history of the bilateral relationship between China and Japan after the Second World War. Stereotypical impressions of Chinese people persist in these modern Japanese comics; more frequent cultural communication between China and Japan is necessary to transform these remaining stereotypes.
