Abstract

The mysterious Teiresias becomes a key character in Sophocles' classic tragedy

Oedipus the King

combining resistance against the divine with prophetic insight. This essay explores the dichotomy in the connection between Apollo and Teiresias from several angles. Teiresias plays the contradictory role of Apollo's messenger in the story

revealing multiple levels of nuance that highlight the intricacy of fate and free agency. By teasing apart these strands

it was hoped to solve the mystery of Teiresias and clarify his unclear role in the cosmic dance between gods and humans. Additionally

the metaphor of blindness highlights the idea that accepting reality

no matter how painful

and developing a strong sense of self-awareness are prerequisites for understanding the truth

beyond just having physical sight.
