Abstract

This paper elaborates on the historical background of defensive space construction in Jin merchant compounds during the Ming and Qing dynasties

systematically analyzes how defense-oriented considerations shaped their site selection

courtyard layout

and defensive facilities

and explores the unique charm

historical value

and implicit wisdom embedded in these structures. It reveals not only the survival strategies and architectural craftsmanship of Jin merchants amid social turbulence but also the enduring significance of their defensive design for modern architecture and cultural heritage preservation.
