Abstract

In his play

Disappearances

Terry Eagleton skillfully constructs a polyphonic narrative to unfold the life story of Kaman

a former West African politician. The overt plot traces Kaman's external conflicts with political associations and his family

while a covert progress

functioning as a deeper structure

maps his internal journey toward self-liberation. These parallel layers engage in a dynamic

dialogic relationship

propelling the narrative into the realm of ideological expression. Thus

Eagleton's primary innovation lies in this inextricable linking of narrative form and ideology

demonstrating that the polyphonic narrative itself functions as a vehicle for political thought and constitutes his significant contribution to the narrative theory of modern drama.
