With more and more foreign people coming to China to do business
travel and study in recent years
the local government almost has every public sign translated into English in big cities
such as Beijing
Shanghai and Chongqing. However
some of these translations are not carefully considered. Those nonstandard translations not only give ambiguous information to the public
but also spoil our country’s image to some extent. The author conducted a survey and found that there are many nonstandard translations of public signs. This paper analyses those problems and is written to call for people’s attention when translating the public signs.
