摘要

Abstract

Markedness in literary works should be interpreted as the theme which distinguishes one work from another. According to Margaret Atwood

the themes of Canadian and American literature are survival and frontier respectively. This thesis tries to make a study of the marked themes to see how different themes exert great influence on the subject matter of the literary works of the two countries

and in turn how literary works reinforce their distinct characters.
