摘要

Abstract

This study examines how the principal hypotactic relations in the English version of the United Nations Global Compact for Safe

Orderly and Regular Migration are functionally reconstructed in the official Chinese version. Ten representative sentence pairs are discussed

covering relative clauses

non-finite constructions

logical connectors

expletives

copular and passive structures

and multi-layered policy sentences. The English text commonly encodes relations through overt grammatical markers and hierarchical embedding. The Chinese version preserves the same policy content but redistributes it through sequential clauses

repeated topics

coordinated predicates

preposed modifiers

and punctuation. The analysis shows that this process is selective rather than mechanical: relations of cause

purpose

scope

and responsibility remain explicit when institutional precision requires them

whereas weaker accompanying relations may be conveyed by clause order and predicate coordination. The findings support a functional principle for institutional translation: the translator should first identify the discourse relation carried by an English form and then reconstruct that relation through natural Chinese information order

predicate organization

and an appropriate degree of explicitness.
