Morrison’s focus on the more abstract bottom level of community allows her to examine the benefits of deep-rooted collective identity; she also touches upon the potential fallacy of intra-group essentialism

of allowing one possible identity to serve as an axiomatic ideal and measure of other identity positions. In this paper

the author tries to follow the natural flow of Morrison’s works. It begins with an examination of her representation of conventional Western family structures in her middle fiction as well as of the isolation that seems an inevitable consequence of radical capitalism and individualism in her fiction. Following that

the paper proceeds to explore

and juxtapose with the alternative ways of thought represented by radical activists and female culture bearers. It is pointed out that in her middle fictions

negotiation between collectivity and individualism are illustrated among characters in Morrison’s middle fictions.
