摘要

Abstract

Desire Under the Elms

one of the most famous dramas of Eugene O'Neil

tells the love story between stepmother Abbie and stepson Eben which is full of sexual and material desires. This research is conducted to analyze the consummate love of Abbie and Eben by using the psychological approach

especially Robert J. Sternberg's triangular theory of love. According to the theory

love has three components: intimacy

passion

and decision/ commitment which interact with three of them and with the actions that they produce and that produce them to form several different kinds of loving experiences. The focus of the study is to analyze how the three components function to help Eben and Abbie find consummate love. The paper traces the moves of the two lovers to find out that the drama is a story not about infatuated love but consummate love

not about depravity but rescue

not about destruction but reconstruction. This research will give readers a new direction of the relationship between Eben and Abbie.
