Against the backdrop of global cross‑cultural adaptation

the same story motif often presents distinctly different philosophical connotations in different cultural contexts. Using "individualism‑collectivism" and "power distance" from Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory as an analytical framework

this study compares

The Ballad of Mulan

with Disney's 1998 animated film

Mulan

to reveal deep differences in self‑identity philosophy between the two. The findings are as follows. On the individualism‑collectivism dimension

the Chinese Mulan's motivation to join the army stems from the collective responsibility of "for family and country

" and her conclusion returns to family honor

embodying a "relational self"; the American Mulan is motivated by "proving herself

" and her outcome rests on personal happiness and love

reflecting an "autonomous self." On the power distance dimension

the Chinese Mulan internalizes and obeys authority

completing her self‑identity within the established order; the American Mulan actively challenges authority and gains recognition for doing so

with her self‑identity manifesting as a transcendence of order. These differences are rooted in the philosophical traditions of the two civilizations. This study provides an operational analytical tool for cross‑cultural adaptation practice and offers strategic insights for the overseas dissemination of traditional Chinese cultural IP: "identify core philosophical elements and moderately adapt modes of expression."
