This study investigates how the levels of context in vocabulary assessment affect the scores on a specialized vocabulary test. Forty participants from an Applied Linguistics postgraduate programme in a UK university of not much difference on proficiency level
took an internet-based vocabulary test with varying levels of context. As an exploratory part of the study
six participants were asked to attend a semi-structured interview for a deeper insight into test-taking strategies according to contextual cues. As a result
overall participants perform better in the discrete-point vocabulary measurement and no significant difference was found between the three vocabulary measurement based on the quantitative data analyses. In this sense
context does not play a major role in a technical vocabulary test for advanced learners in these three test formats. Interestingly
the qualitative results appear to be inconsistent with test results
as participates prefer contextualized vocabulary test more compared with decontextualized test. This study concludes that although context does not play a major role in specialized test
it is still test-taker’s preference and it will pose more positive washback for vocabulary teaching and learning.
