To improve listening fluency
and foreign or second language learning
there are various multimedia resources could be used as learning materials. In particular
adding captions to these authentic English resources is becoming noticeable popular in recent years
which is generally deemed to effectively improve L2 listening comprehension and fluency
and considered to make a contribution to vocabulary acquisition. These common opinions led to extensive research on captions. However
most studies prefer to focus on the subtitled audio-visual materials rather than investigate into subtitled audio-alone programs. In this study
it paid attention to the latter one and designed a matching selection experiment. Participants listened to English sentences with standard and intralingual subtitles
in which there were four matching conditions
including audio-subtitle matched condition
and audio-subtitle noun
verb
adjective mismatched conditions. Then they made responses to in total 48 sentences. The reaction accuracy and response time were measured and analysed. The results indicated that intralingual subtitles have more benefits in English listening. In contrast
Chinese subtitles would play a dominant role and lead interference to English learning. Moreover
verbs were relatively low possibility to be acquired during the subtitled audio condition.
